How To Skyrocket To The Top of Local Search Results
In the last lesson we discussed how to easily generate leads by creating a lead magnet aka ethical bribe to boost your conversion rate.
Today we’re going to talk about how to quickly get to the top of the local search engine results.
Now before I get started, I want to explain to you what I mean about “quickly”. It doesn’t mean overnight and it doesn’t mean 6 weeks. It’ll take 180 days or so and sometimes longer than that.
However, compared to trying to rank for a national search result which can take at least 2 years to do, 180 days isn’t so bad.
It could be a lot faster depending on the size of the locality and competition. But 180 days is about average.
Now lets move on. I’m going to list the top three factors that will put you on top of the local search engine rankings. Doing these three things will certainly give you a competitive advantage because a majority of local businesses aren’t doing these.
With you implementing these into your website, you’re giving Google what it wants and your competition is not. So please don’t take this lightly and be sure to add these to your website.
On Page Optimization
On page optimization refers to factors that have an effect on your website or webpage listing in natural search results. It structures your site in a way that’s very easy for Google and the other major search engines to understand what your site is all about.
The most important factor of on page optimization is the content. Basically, is it worthy of a search result position. Google loves to give their users the best results possible and great content comes down to two things:
- Supply and Demand - The user is searching for an article, a how to video, an image, a news story, whatever… your content needs to be good enough to supply that demand.
- Linkability - Is your content good enough that other websites want to link to it? If people won’t share it or link to it, then Google doesn’t think it’s important enough to rank. Why would they put a site in the top search results when no one is talking about it?
You can literally ignore everything else I’m going to list for on page optimization and if you are really good at having content so good that you’re supplying exactly what users are searching for and if your webpages are being linked and shared all over the place, Google will reward you.
You should definitely completely optimize every page on your site because that will give you the ultimate edge.
Below is a checklist of all the factors you need to completely optimize your website. Again, I can’t tell you enough how important this is. So please download the checklist and implement everything on that page.
For a complete and thorough analysis of how optimized your website currently is, I have a free audit tool and it only takes 60 seconds and you’ll discover why your homepage isn’t ranking.
Schema and Map Embeds
Schema is basically a language that the search engine understand so they can interpret the information on your web pages more effectively, thus giving relevant results to the user based on their search.
Google Map embed is having another signal telling search engines that your business is located in your area. Having your location embedded on your website will not only help with your local SEO, but it also gives an added convenience to your website visitors. Your potential customers can easily click on the map for driving directions and be navigated to your business!
Instead of trying to explain through text how to implement Schema and map embeds on your site, I’ve created a video walking you through the process.
Business listings or citations are an online reference to your business's name, address and phone number (NAP). Like links to your website, Google uses them when evaluating the online authority of your business.
Citations from well-established and well-indexed portals (i.e., Superpages.com) help increase the degree of certainty the search engines have about your business's contact information and categorization.
Citations also verify and validate that your business is part of your city or community. It’s nearly impossible for a business to fake membership in a chamber of commerce or a city or county business index.
Citations and links from these kinds of websites can dramatically improve your local search engine rankings.
But the most important thing about citations is that every single listing need to be exactly the same or your ranking will suffer.
If you’re business is 123 Anywhere Street, then you must list it as that and not 123 Anywhere St.
Being 100% consistent is what gets your business noticed by Google.
You’ll want to list your business in the major directories such as Google My Business, Bing Places for Business, Yahoo! Local, YellowPages.com, Yelp, etc.
You’ll need to be listed in at least 50 directories and unfortunately, there’s no way around this.
I have a free tool where you can find out what directories you’re not listed in and what directories are showing misinformation that’s preventing you from being consistent.
Remember, this is extremely important in you want to reap the benefits of high rankings and to be found where consumers are looking for your product or service.
